I’d like some advice from my friends. I have two small incidents to report which may qualify for “a senior moment” but I’m not sure so I’d like you to weigh in.
The first incident involves music. Although I was not very interested in classical music when I was at Tech, I have since developed a great love for it. I listen to other kinds of music too, such as classic rock, blues, and folk music (which is where I started my musical education) along with Brahms, Beethoven, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Peter Tchaikovsky, Ravel and composers of that ilk: the romantic phase of classical music. This all happened under the tutelage of my dad who somehow managed to transfer his love of music to me.
(How that happened I don’t know…I only know that it did, somewhat miraculously.)
Anyway, one day I was in the mood for some Chopin piano music. I have several CDs by him. One features people’s favorite selections, his softest gentlest most beautiful piano music. Another CD has his famous Concerto No. 1 which is a masterpiece of emotional language and technical brilliance. However, sometimes I insert a CD and forget about it. During this pandemic, I don’t drive every day so when I had to go somewhere a few days ago, I got in the car, started the engine and turned on the radio. Lo and behold, the beautiful notes of Chopin!
What a wonderful coincidence. It was just the kind of music I hoped for so I was delighted! I glanced at my phone and verified that it was Chopin and that was enough to please me; I didn’t need to know the title to enjoy it. Of course, I expected the piece to end after several minutes because my radio station, KDFC, will occasionally play excerpts from famous works rather than the whole concerto or the entire symphony.
As I drove along, I got the strangest sensation that something wasn’t quite right. Then it hit me! I looked at the panel and saw that my CD player was playing Chopin—the concerto I had put in a few days before and since forgotten about! It was sheer coincidence that the radio station happened also to be playing a work by Chopin … albeit a completely different one!
So my question to you all is this:
Do I have all my marbles or did I have a senior moment (you can have fun with this one if you wish!) because I believed, mistakenly, Chopin was on the radio and not the CD player?
I rather think “no, no senior moment!” because both sources were playing Chopin at the same time…so that should count for something in my favor, right?
I firmly believe this: that if there is a full point given for genuine “Senior Moments” I think this incident can be rated no more than half a point.
I’d like to hear your opinion. You can say whatever you like; I can take it.
I think I’m going to go listen to some Chopin.
Roger
I will report on the second incident another time: “The Case of the Missing Sweater”.
