The truth is, if you are going to study American History, you have to study Black History too—because they are one and the same, really. Whippings of Black slaves are part of the long history of slavery in America—a truth which, however much we might wish it to be otherwise, cannot be buried in neglect or falsehood and which simply will not and cannot go away. It is part of our nation’s story—and part of our national consciousness. When we discuss modern race relations today, we would do well to develop a greater understanding of slavery before we offer our opinions as to the way forward.
